Homeopathy

Homeopathy Defined

Homeopathic medicine or homeopathy is a medical practice based on the notion that the human body has the ability to heal itself. Homeopathy was created in Germany in the 1700s and is a popular practice throughout Europe today. Homeopathic practitioners often use nature-based mixtures or solutions to address disease. Studies show these potentiated substances use fewer active ingredients, have shown positive effects.

Primary Principles of Homeopathy

One of the primary principles of homeopathic medicine is that “like cures like.” Therefore, if a substance causes a symptom in a healthy person, introduction of a very small amount of the same substance may cure the illness. The notion is that the body’ healing and self-regulatory process will be enhanced by the introduction of the substance. Individualized treatment of patients is another principle of homeopathy. It’s the practice of choosing medications that are as similar as possible to the characteristics of the illness in the patient. A physician will look at the patient as a whole, and take into account the symptoms and signs of the disease. A patient’s physical makeup, personality, temperament and genetic predispositions are also equally taken into account. Homeopathic medical practitioners also believe in minimal doses. Doses can range from those that have similar concentrations to conventional medicine and very high dilution.

Treatments & Therapies

Homeopathic remedies are regulated in the U.S. and have been since 1938. They are generally considered to be safe. Homeopathic medicine has been used to address many long-term illnesses like allergies, atopic dermatitis, rheumatoid arthritis and irritable bowel syndrome. Homeopathic medicine is also used in physical therapy to address minor injuries like muscle strains or sprains, and even cuts and scrapes. There are many popular homeopathic treatments. Allium Cepa (onion) is used to address symptoms of the common cold. Arnica (mountain daisy) is commonly used in sports medicine and first aid treatment in addressing shock and trauma from injury. It’s also been known to reduce pain and speed up the healing process. Chamomille is used in aromatherapy, but it’s also helpful in addressing irritable infants, especially when teething.
