A Doppler echocardiography is conducted using ultrasound technology and examines the heart or blood vessels. While echocardiograms use high frequency sound waves to generate an image of the heart, Doppler technology allows doctors to determine the speed and direction of blood flow. Doppler is a noninvasive test used to estimate blood flow through blood vessels by bounding high-frequency sound waves off moving red blood cells.
Primary Principles of Doppler Echocardiography
The Doppler effect is the change in frequency of a wave. This effect is utilized during the Doppler echocardiography to assess the direction of blood flow, and the velocity of blood and cardiac tissue. With velocity measurements doctors are able to assess cardiac valve areas and function, and identify abnormal communications between the left and right side of the heart. It can also be used to identify blood leaking from the valves. Doppler echocardiograms are preferred by doctors because it doesn’t require invasive procedures such as cardiac catheterization in order to measure blood flow of the heart. Doppler is also used to examine children, because there is no age or size requirement for the test.
Treatments & Therapies
There are a few variations of the traditional 1D Doppler exam. With 2D Doppler imaging 2D velocity estimation is used with Doppler ultrasound and able to generate velocity vectors with axial and lateral velocity components. It is used to measure the time shifts and phase shifts. The two types of 2D Doppler are Vector Doppler and Speckle tracking. Vector Doppler examination is based on phase shift, while Speckle tracking is used to estimate blood flow in ultrasound systems. Doppler exams are used to diagnose many conditions including:
