Ozone Therapy

Ozone Therapy

Ozone is a highly reactive form of pure oxygen. According to the American Academy of Ozone therapy, in medicine ozone is used to create a curative response in the body. When the body’s potential to heal itself is inhibited, ozone can help stimulate it, allowing the body to once again heal itself.

oxygenAs a naturopathic medical procedure, ozone therapy is a natural way to improve both circulation and utilization of oxygen by the tissues. Ozone creates improved circulation by decreasing the thickness and viscosity of blood.

Uses

Ozone therapy can be used to address slipped disks in the spine, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and macular degeneration.

Ozone Therapy can also be used for:

Treatment

cm_slide_20In most cases small amounts of ozone are added to pure oxygen. Doses are created by ozone generators to allow precise measurements. The exact amount of ozone used is determined on a case by case basis after careful medical review by a practitioner with training in ozone therapy.

History

Studied for decades, the effects of ozone therapy are consistent and provide minimal side effects. It was first introduced in 1896 when Nikola Tesla patented the first ozone generator in the US.

During the WWI doctors applied ozone therapy topically to infected wounds, discovering that it reduced infection, but also possessed hemodynamic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Method

Similar to an IV treatment, a small amount of blood is removed into a sterile container. Ozone is added to the blood and then reinfused.

Ozone therapy disrupts the integrity of the bacterial cell envelope through oxidation of the phospholipids and lipoproteins. In fungi, ozone inhibits cell growth at certain stages. When used on viruses, ozone damages the viral capsid and upsets the reproductive cycle by disrupting the virus-to-cell contact with peroxidation. When cells become weak they are susceptible to viruses, but they’re also open to ozone which helps eliminate infected cells from the body, allowing the body to replace them with healthy cells.

What to Expect

Once your dosage is determined, your trained practitioner will administer the ozone treatment at the facility. The treatment can take as little as 35 to 45 minutes. Other than at needle insertion, there is typically no pain associated with the therapy.

Risks & Side Effects

Ozone from the atmosphere can be toxic when inhaled from large amounts of polluted air; however, when used in controlled amounts for medical purposes the risks are limited. There is currently not enough evidence to identify the exact risks or side effects associated with ozone therapy. In some cases blood clots in the lungs have occurred.
