Mind Body Medicine

Mind Body Medicine Defined

Mind-body medicine is the belief in the power of thoughts and emotions to influence physical health. Mind-body medicine has been practiced for thousands of years. Ancient healing practices including Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic medicine emphasize the connection between the mind and body.

Primary Principles of Mind Body Medicine

Stress can cause your body to release stress hormones which affect all your systems and organs. Stress and anxiety can result in reduced heart and immune function. Depression and distress can diminish the body’s natural ability to heal as well. Studies have shown certain emotions to be associated with disease. Negative attitudes have been associated with everything from heart disease to obesity. While there is no evidence to prove that negative emotions cause disease, there is research that shows these feelings to be unhealthy.

The primary principle of mind body medicine is to get the mind and body to work together to reduce stress and relax. The goal is to reduce levels of stress hormones in the body, and improve immune function as a result.

Treatments & Therapies

There are a variety of treatments and therapies that utilize mind-body medicine. Biofeedback and cognitive behavioral therapy are two popular forms of mind-body medicine. In biofeedback therapy patients are trained to control functions that typically occur involuntarily. The patient watches a monitor that provides feedback and overtime trains the brain to control these behaviors. Biofeedback is used to address a variety of conditions including tension headache, migraine headache and chronic pain. Cognitive behavioral therapy is used to help patients recognize and change harmful thoughts. Cognitive therapy helps people control feelings that might stand in the way of normal life including fear and depression.

Mind-body medicine has been used to address many types of disease including:

  • Cancer
  • High blood pressure
  • Asthma
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Obesity
  • Effects of chemotherapy
  • Insomnia
  • Diabetes
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Menopausal symptoms
  • Mental health issues like anxiety and depression
  • And more
