One Third of Americans Looking to Alternative Medicine

What are some of the alternatives being sought out? The studies show that people look to alternate practices like yoga, deep breathing, chiropractors, probiotics, and fish oil to address various health issues.

Patients use alternative medicine as a compliment to conventional care. Only 5% of Americans use alternative medicine on its own, according to data from the National Health Statistics Report.

To compile this report, the U.S. government surveys over 89,000 American adults and over 17,000 children between the ages of 4 and 17 years old. The data is carefully studied in order to determine the health habits of a representative sample of Americans.
Alternative therapies are used by patients to address everything from chronic conditions to stress relief.

Why it’s Trending

Why is alternative medicine growing in popularity? Not only is there more research and information on alternative therapies and treatments, but the data is much more accessible than in the past. The National Institute of Health (NIH) doesn’t study why changes in the use of particular complementary medicines occur, but availability may also be a reason why they are growing in popularity. Yoga for example, is more popular now than before because of the growing number of yoga studies across the nation.
“The use of melatonin, shown in studies to have some benefits for sleep issues, has risen dramatically,” said Dr. Josephine P. Briggs in a press release. Briggs is the director of the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.
